Reader Reviews:

Dive Site: The Whale

Location: Milln Reef, Cairns (16°46'S 146°16')

Description: Reef

Depth: 10 - 26 metres (32 - 85 feet)

Visibility: 15 - 25 metres (50 - 80 feet)

Rating: ****

A dive for beginner to intermediate level. The Whale is a large isolated bommie with abundant marine life. Sleeping white tipped reef sharks and bumphead parrotfish are common on morning dives and sleeping turtles on night dives. An excellent wall dive site offering good depth. On a low tide, waves break at the top of the 'bommie' creating a plume of water similar to a whale's, hence the site's name.

A lovely blue descent to a sand crossing, passing over to the outer bommie and past a swim-through to the deepest part of the reef. A couple of long nose emperors were following us. Up though swim through there were lovely fans and whip coral.
