Scuba Diving in Cairns, Great Barrier Reef, Australia
Reader Reviews:
Dive Site: Wheat Sheaf
Location: Lord Howe Island, Off the east coast of Australia
Description: Wall dive
Depth: Very deep!
Visibility: 30 metres (100 feet)
Rating: *****
After an hour at the surface we moved round to Wheat Sheaf, a rock outcrop on the western tip of the rock. Anchored next to another wall, (18m this one) we cruised down and around the corner into the current to see huge kingfish and drummer scattered around. Coming back to the line for our safety stop we were suddenly surrounded by over a dozen Galapagos whaler sharks, each no more than a metre long, who were after the drummer. These sharks are quite inquisitive and swim at you to get a better look but we waved our arms and they fled. One diver had an additional bonus sighting of a very large bull ray circling him on his ascent!
