Only five minutes boat journey out of Santa Ponsa's marina there is an island called Malgrats. It has recently been made into a marine reserve, but this status has not been with it long enough to have any significant impact on the marine life found there. That said, there is still a high proliferation of life on both sides of the island. Two separate dives can be made to cover both sides of the island, and although similar, they will no doubt reveal different marine encounters. The eastern side of the island may be a marginally nicer dive due to some more interesting seabed topography.
Dives generally begin by being dropped into the water a short swim from the southern point of the cliffs. As you head down into the blue the submerged walls of the island quickly come into view. To start the dive, swim down to the seafloor and keep the wall either on your right or your left, depending on which side of the island the boat will be picking you up from. You will come across large, angular boulders that are metres in length and covered in red soft corals. There are also sponges, some huge shells and seagrass that create a garden amongst which wrasse, grouper, cardinalfish and damselfish can all be found. Darting into the wall from the blue you may also see jacks and schools of barracuda. Within the rocks themselves, keep an eye open for moray eels and octopus. We found one octopus squeezed into the smallest of holes, using a fragment of rock to try and hide behind. We tried to move the rock in order to photograph him, but he had other ideas - his firm grip on it was much stronger than ours, so he won the battle to keep himself hidden!

Just been dropped off at the hotel by Jim. Great dives today including a dive at the tip of Malgrats. So much life, Octopus breeding and also sea-cucumbers breeding, two lobsters and loads of eels.
