The Pollockshields was built in 1890 in Hamburg, Germany and was originally called the Graecia. It was refitted in 1904 as a German naval supply ship for operations in the North Atlantic in the First World War. 10 years later it was captured by the HMS Argonaut. After recapture by the British government the steamer was finally renamed Pollockshields. Travelling from Cardiff, Wales the steamer ran into a squall on September 2nd 1915. Five days later the ship struck the nearshore reef at Elbow Beach and sank.
