Dive Site: The Rabat Wreck

Location: 3 minute RIB ride out of Arreciffe Harbour

Description: Wreck dive

Length: 30 metres approx. (100 feet)

Depth: 42 metres to seabed (138 feet)

Visibility: 15 - 40 metres (50 - 130 feet)

We entered the water off the back of the RIB and swam to the buoy secured on the wheelhouse. Starting the descent you can see the whole length of the wreck. Going along the gunnels, you have to be careful of your buoyancy as this wreck has lots of rusty metal and is covered in sea anemones. We swam toward the winch where you can swim inside the cargo area with care. Going around the seaward side of the wreck, we saw a giant shoal of barracuda, there must have been 300 hundred fish and they circled the wreck for the whole dive. We only managed 20 minutes on the wreck, as the guide was conscious of the bottom time and the changing tide. We started our ascent up the line and the current really started to run, causing a massive drop in visibility. Exiting the water was a bit difficult with the current running.

The depth of this wreck is 18 meters to the top (starboard side) and 35 meters to the seabed, best dived using nitrox. It has shifted around a little over the last 5 years and is now wholly on its port side, covered in black sea urchins (not anemones). The barracuda shoal are frequently seen and must be resident, there are also some very large solitary barracuda around 2 meters long patrolling the wreck. The wreck is indeed very rusty and I wouldn’t recommend penetration to the bowels, but peek into the wheelhouse etc. Watch out for morays and scorpionfish. A current does run across the wreck at times, entry and exit is via a permanent line which is tied onto to the boat.
