Scuba Diving in Cuba, Caribbean
Dive Site: Jardin de las Gorgonias (Gorgonian Garden)
Location: Maria la Gorda, Cuba
Description: Reef / gorgonian garden
Depth: 15 metres (50 feet)
Visibility: 30 metres (100 feet)
Rating: *****
A shallow garden with an abundance of gorgonians - even for Cuba! There was also a proliferation of other sponges and coral as well as the gorgonians. Yellowtail snapper followed us for the duration of the dive (over an hour) swimming right up to us at times and looking us in the eye. We travelled for about two hundred metres through the garden, with the guide pointing out things of note as we went. Under some of the rocks we found a very large green moray and a nurse shark. In the sandy patches white fish darted into their burrows and there were two huge Nassau groupers, a balloonfish, and a boxfish searching for food. The list goes on!
This was the best shallow dive we did at Maria la Gorda; even without some of the more impressive creatures it would have been spectacular and the abundance and variety of life made it stunning.
