Dive Site: El Laberinto
Location: East of the lighthouse, Cienfuegos, Cuba
Description: Reef
Depth: 51 metres + (167 feet)
Visibility: 20 metres (65 feet)
Rating: *****
El Laberinto (the Labyrinth) as its name would suggest is a series of gullies, swim-throughs and tunnels, formed by a unique arrangement of the reef and coral formations. Entering in the shallower part of the reef at about 8m in a coral garden you can make your way though the maze towards the deeper part of the reef where eventually the reef wall drops away to 50m and beyond. As we descended through the sand gullies we entered a short cavern / tunnel which lead us to 30m where the wall starts to drop away steeply. Coming from the darker cavern out onto the drop-off made the water a startling azure blue with the sun shining from above. Having spent some time on the drop-off looking for the ever elusive pelagics and admiring the huge gorgonian fan corals we returned via a different route into the labyrinth where we saw moray eels and a whole host of different hard corals. This is great dive.
