Silverado is so named because of the silvertip cleaning station found here, the only one known of at the moment around Cocos. Our dive guides reckoned they had 99% success rate of seeing silvertips. We must have been very unfortunate as neither our group nor the other group saw even a glimpse of a silvertip in the four dives that both groups completed here.
However, I loved diving here. While we were waiting for the silvertips it gave me the opportunity to take a look at some of the critters which are on every reef but you never get the chance to watch. There were some small red fish living in burrows who were incredibly territorial - you'll know if you're on top of one of their burrows! There are also jawfish (tiny little fish a bit like blennies) living in holes all over the sea floor. One particular one saw me watching him and moved a small pebble he had next to his burrow over his head. When he thought I'd gone he would move the pebble away and take a look around to see if it was safe.
A bit further away from the cleaning station, heading a bit deeper there's the opportunity to find rosy-lipped batfish. These are something you really shouldn't come away from Cocos without seeing. They are so bizarre looking that you will be laughing into your reg when you see them. Near to where the batfish are found there are also many starfish, snake eels and other reef fish to see and we also found a mantis shrimp.
