Scuba Diving in Baltimore, County Cork, Ireland, Europe
Dive Site: Kedge Island Drift
Location: Kedge Island, near Baltimore, County Cork, Ireland, Europe
Description: Reef / drift
Depth: 6 - 22 metres (20 - 72 feet)
Visibility: 5 metres (15 feet)
Rating: ***
Parallel to the main shipping channel that runs past Kedge Island there is another gulley that runs east-west. The dive starts off at about 20 metres before shallowing to around 6 metres then sloping back to the 20 metre mark. When we first entered the water we saw a large lobster walking around in the open on the seabed. The current was very relaxed at first allowing us to spend time looking at crabs hiding in fissures in the rocks. As we got further into the dive the current picked up, carrying us at about 1.5 knots maximum over the kelp in the shallows. We dropped down again at the end of the dive onto a fairly barren seabed except for kelp and a solitary dogfish and the current slowed once again so we surfaced.
