Scuba Diving in Donegal, Ireland, Europe
Dive Site: St. John's Point
Location: St. John's Point, Dunkineely, Co. Donegal, Ireland
Description: Reef / wall
Depth: 30 metres (1080 feet)
Visibility: 20 + metres (65 feet)
Several dives are available from the same location. Leaving the jetty by the lighthouse, swim out 80m and you drop down to 23m. From there you can set off east or west. Whichever dive you choose to do, you can follow the wall back to the inlet and do your safety stop while finning over a kelp forest filled with life. Nearby there is a beach suitable for launching a RIB and a sheltered area suitable for trainee divers. There is a small wreck on the northern side of the point at 49m. A very popular dive site.

This is great place for a dive lots to see and do been there 10 times already, enjoyed it lot. Worth going to.
I've been here a few times to the lighthouse - a great spot, beach is good to leave the children at in the summer as well while your diving.
I have been here more than a few times yes, enjoyed diving and very friendly lighthouse family.

This can be a very nice site and the visibility is generally top notch once you're outside of the plankton months. It teems with life year round and is a good site for beginners as there is a nice shelf at about 10 metres and a drop to approximately 27 metres. The only issue anybody could have is the hoof up and down from the lighthouse with equipment but we all need exercise ;-)

I was at the lighthouse about 25 times last season. There is always something new. Fin straight out from the steps to the rock and that is the start of one dive going left looking from the steps. Alternatively you can go straight out until you meet a gulley in the sea bed. Follow this to your left and you will come back up to the wall and into the steps. You can go out from the steps to the gap in the rocks to your right and round the stack, this is more of a challenge and watch the weather. Heading back there is a house on the right with lobster pots behind it. Follow the road that runs past this house and you come to a small harbour, this is an excellent place for trainees or a shallow dive. Jump in at the slip and go down on a shallow reef. Follow this out and back. No matter the weather there is always somewhere to dive at St Johns Point…

Awesome site and a great guesthouse that we stayed in just down the road (5 mins drive from lighthouse), really friendly owners and great value. [edit DSD: see owner’s post below for details.]

We have a cottage to rent at Ballycroy, near St Johns Point (about 2 km before the beach). It can sleep 7 adults. There are also bunk beds and a cot available. Large sunroom with great sea views and a utility area for clothes drying and storing gear—would be suitable for divers. Email Charles & Rosemary: email@example.com
