Scuba Diving at Mabul Island, Borneo
Reader Reviews:
Dive Site: Lobster Wall
Location: Mabul Island
Description: Reef / wall
Depth: 30 metres (100 feet)
Visibility: 15 metres (50 feet)
Rating: ****
Lobster wall is a dive site located on the far side of Mabul Island, the opposite side of the island to the main jetty. It is a sloping coral wall and when we dived here in mid May the minimum water temperature at 30m was 28 degrees and there was little current. Again there was just so much to see, with all manner of nudibranchs, sea slugs and a dense covering of corinthias, sweetlips and fusiliers on the upper reef slopes. See the attached picture of a sea slug - this side-gilled slug comes in many different colours and can shed its mantle in three sections if threatened, unique to this species. There were masked pufferfish, and towards the end of the dive we were met by a huge green turtle that stayed and played for a while. There was also a lovely octopus, which merged with the coral wall. The diving at both Mabul and Sipadan is made easy by the boat drop offs and pickups which means you simply head in the direction of the current, negating the need to plan air and dive time to turn and come back to a moored boat.
