Scuba Diving in Perhentian, Malaysia

Dive Site: D' Lagoon
Location: Perhentian, Malaysia
Description: Reef reached by boat
Depth: 12 metres (40 feet)
Visibility: 15 metres (50 feet)

Directly out from the beach of PIR across to Perhentian Kecil, is the dive site of D' Lagoon, which lies on a promontory of Kecil. Surface current may be present and drift you & boat along, but below the surface may be no current. The island's land drops away gently to around 12m, and in between these is a huge panacea of tall brain, walnut, leaf, pillar, table, star and lobe corals. These structures are probably quite old and remain largely undamaged, which is great because many fish seem to favour this area.
The sand/reef fringe occurs at 12m, and is worth following for some time as blue spotted lagoon rays are often seen. There is no point in swimming too far but to just move slowly around the general area, looking in all the nooks and crannies of the large hard coral formations. Some of these are large rounded balls and others have formed strange chair shapes or in one case a large doughnut! Small fish are everywhere, but there are also numerous burrfish, and in the shadows soldierfish and copper sweepers.
As the depth is quite shallow, then much bottom time can be had. To the rough northeast, a sand chute exists to shallows and the hard coral garden appears to initially peter out but continues on after the chute. It is here that some of the largest formations may be found, and is a really good place to finish the dive. Be careful on surfacing as there may be other boats present, and it's worth looking out for boat lines or mooring buoys to ascend by.
