Dive Site: Lions Head
Location: Thilafushi Reef, North Male Atoll
Description: Reef / drift
Depth: 30 metres max (100 feet)
Visibility: 25 metres max (80 feet)
Rating: ****
Not the prettiest of the boat dives, as the reef belongs to Thilafushi ('Trash Island') and you can see the oil and gas facilities which are an eyesore by Maldivian Standards. The reef is a protected marine area and makes up for its location with a good range of overhangs and caves between 5 and 30 metres. There is abundant fish life with good variations of pelagics and reef fish. Eagle rays were spotted along with sharks and tuna. The best part of this dive was seeing the recovery of the hard corals that are being monitored and have shown signs of 20 - 30% growth since 1998. A very enjoyable dive and well worth a trip across the choppy channel.
