Dive Site: Old Shark Point
Location: Thilafushi Reef, North Male Atoll
Description: Reef / drift
Depth: 30 metres max (100 feet)
Visibility: 20 metres (65 feet)
Rating: ****
We had to descend down a mooring line to avoid being carried away from the corner of the reef which is the highlight of the dive. Old Shark Point sits on the corner of Thilafushi Reef in the channel between the South and North Male Atolls. When you have a strong flow in the channel and the water is also being drawn from the Atoll, it creates a strong current on the corner. This results in massive amounts of pelagic fish using it as a feeding area. We saw big shoals of blue fin jacks, tuna to 1m, and the highlight of the dive was the sighting of two very large blue marlin feeding on shoals of baitfish.
The dive is not for the weak swimmers as the current is very strong and you have to hold the bottom to get a chance to see the action.
