Dive Site: Kasmira Reef
Location: Ils de Pins, New Caledonia
Description: Reef
Depth: 16 metres (52 feet)
Visibility: 30 metres + (100 feet)
Rating: ****
At Kasmira Reef the base of the reef is at around 16 metres before the seabed slowly slopes away. As we descended there was a small coral head with a hollow section underneath it where a 3 metre long tawny nurse shark had been resting. Disturbed by divers already down this majestic beige coloured creature hastily swam out of its hiding place and straight towards me before sensing my presence and brushing past me at the last minute. As we continued along the reef there were small breaks in the reef all densely covered in large schools of yellow snappers. Blue lunar fusiliers swam around us and pipefish hung in large numbers against the colourful hard coral backdrop. There was only a slight current running east to west which we swam against out to the further point on our dive. As we rounded a final point on the reef a huge 1.5 metre black sand ray was resting against the reef base before gliding down the sand slope.
Returning towards the moored boat, we ascended along the upper part of the reef which was teeming with life. Small moray eels poked their noses out of tiny holes and chocolate dip damselfish huddled in small groups as we passed by. This was a very colourful dive suitable for all levels of diver. With lots to see it would have been a photographers dream.
