Dive Site: Wall of Snapper
Location: Ils de Pins, New Caledonia
Description: Reef / drift
Depth: 13 metres (43 feet)
Visibility: 30 metres + (100 feet)
Rating: ***
Located a 20 minute boat ride from Vao, it's no surprise that Wall of Snapper is named after the huge schools of snappers that are found here. True to its name we dropped into quite a current and were soon drifting along past large numbers of yellow snapper which hugged the reef. The reef is essentially a huge section of the main barrier reef which has lots of gullies and fissures to explore. Using these to hide from the current is a useful tool and gives time to inspect the lovely hard corals before drifting on past the huge gorgonian fans which grow on the outer reef wall. There were also lots of spotted grouper here and we saw a massive coronation grouper. Again pristine coral, great viz at 30 metres + and the option to utilise the current for a leisurely drift dive before gliding out into the blue and sending up the delayed SMB from 6 metres.
