The Raftsund drift dive is located around an hours RIB ride from Lofotdykk dive centre in Kabelvaag. It's the scenery of Raftsund which is truly stunning. It had been snowing for the past two days and as we left the small jetty for Raftsund the sky was a purple and orange and the surrounding mountains were covered in fresh snow. Heading out into the fjords we passed between enormous rock faces and as we got further into the fjords the surface water had started to freeze. Slowing down we pushed through the thin ice until we reached our location. Once in the water we descended in pairs on the end of thick buoy line which had been rigged with two loops at the end (one for each buddy to slip a single hand through) and the other end was attached to an orange buoy allowing the RIB to follow each pair. We had been briefed to expect a strong current and were looking forward to some speed along the rocky wall at 10 metres or so. Unfortunately we descended to find only a very slight current (something which only happens about 3 times a year - apparently!!). Nevertheless we cruised along past large boulders covered in anemones and urchins. Huge fronds of thick brown kelp wafted and the current providing shelter to cod and other small fish. We followed a ledge along the wall at around 10 metres although it was clear that the wall dropped away to much greater depths only a short distance out from the main wall. Once back on the surface the RIB picked us up and we headed back through the fjords visiting a polar station (used for studying the Arctic weather conditions) on our return journey. This was some of the most stunning scenery I have seen yet.
