Scuba Diving in Coron, Palawan, the Philippines
Dive Site: Black Island Wreck
Location: Black Island, Coron, Palawan, Philippines
Description: Wreck
Length:
Depth: 25 metres (80 feet)
Visibility: 10 metres (30 feet)
Rating: ***
The Black Island Wreck, named after the island it rests beside, is a 3 hour boat journey from Coron and so is not something that is regularly dived. As such when we went there the guides had not been before and after some vague direction from the crew of the boat we all headed into the water to hunt for the wreck. It took us 62 minutes to find it, by which time I was getting low on air so I didn't actually spend a lot of time on the wreck itself.
For future reference, there is a small hut on Black Island and if you enter the water here and head to 20m - 25m, hopefully you should find the wreck. The seabed at this depth is quite barren, with just the occasional burrowing fish and not much in the way of coral although keep your eyes peeled for trevally and stingrays which dart past periodically. In the shallows the reef is very pretty and there is plenty of life so a possible dive plan is to head up to about 8m after you're finished on the wreck in order to look at the reef. Black Island itself is stunning and if you're staying for lunch you can swim ashore to explore.
