Scuba Diving in Fury Shoals, Marsa Alam, the Red Sea
Reader Reviews:
Dive Site: Sha'ab Maksour
Location: Fury Shoals, Marsa Alam
Description: Reef / drop off
Depth: 40 metres + (120 feet)
Visibility: 30 metres (100 feet)
Rating: ****
The zodiac dropped us off early morning into the deep blue, again we hung around just in case! No joy for anything big so we headed along the wall. Large gorgonian sea fans protruded delicately out with a profusion of anthias around them. Here a yellow margin triggerfish was having a feeding frenzy with some rabbitfish. When you come to the corner of the wall the dive becomes shallower to 15m and there are six pinnacles you can swim around. Make this your turning point and swim back up the wall at a shallower depth. Towards the end of the dive we just hung in a gulley watching a pair of big eyed emperors fighting with a trevally.
We did a second dive here and this time our boat was moored over the pinnacles so as usual we dropped onto them but firstly diverted to the blue just to check for an unlikely shark! It was good to spend the dive on the pinnacles the second time round. There was a humphead wrasse which is always a nice Red Sea treat. There was a very slight current around some of the pinnacles.

One of the few sites I have seen black crinoids. Also on the edge of the wall at 30 metres is a cave that descends to emerge at 40 metres. Only a short swim through. Lots of colourful soft corals and angelfish at this depth.

I've done this dive a couple of times, once from a liveaboard and then this year by RIB with Red Sea Safari’s from Wadi Lahami Eco Village.
The dive we did this time was deep through a hole in the reef which tunnelled down from about 15 meters to 40 meters, quite easy to do just deep my depth 46 meters so best done early on in the dive. At 40 meters it opens into a cavern with a couple of arches going out to the blue. Spectacular dive but should really be done tekkie! I was narked and was going to do the 2nd arch at 55 meters but decided wisely against it! Spectacular dive though!
