Here, as is usual on Red Sea liveaboards, we did a check dive for our first dive of the charter. I was instantly impressed with the chosen spot which was a nice sheltered shallow scenic piece of reef. We followed the reef round lots of coral bommies. They consisted of hard corals in excellent condition including large table corals and an abundance of staghorn. I was very impressed with the quality and it was reminiscent of reefs I have dived in Fiji. The boat owner explained that this is what the northern Red Sea was like some twenty years ago before the influx of dive tourism.

I saw a pair of lemon/masked butterflyfish, a first of many on this trip who were posing in front of some contrasting red fire coral. Masked pufferfish who are a favourite Red Sea fish of mine played among the coral heads along with some orange tang triggerfish. We also swam past a small picturesque wreck that was almost completely full of glassfish. This wreck is unnamed and thought to be an American yacht that sank around five years ago. It is small in size measuring only 15m long so really only one or two diver should enter it at one time, but it is only worth going inside it just for the hell of it! The wreck lies in the sand at 15m on its side at the bottom of the reef. It went down in rough weather on the southwestern corner of the patch reef system known as Abu Galawa Small on the northwestern corner of the Fury Shoal reef system. The wreck lies on its starboard side and the hull is still intact but the main mast is missing. It is extremely well covered in variety of soft and hard corals as well as housing lots of fish. This dive was a fun and encouraging start to a great trip.
