Scuba Diving in Marsa Alam, the Red Sea
Reader Reviews:
Dive Site: Dolphin Reef
Location: Fury Shoals, Marsa Alam
Description: Reef / drop off
Depth: 40 metres + (130 feet)
Visibility: 30 metres (100 feet)
Rating: ****
We dropped onto the sandy bottom at around 20m and headed deeper to try and find the drop off. Me and my buddy were leading with the rest of the group following, the distance to the drop off was slightly longer then expected and took around 10 minutes. The sea was a dark blue at the drop off and silver fish were flickering in the distance, we looked out hoping for a sign of a shark but instead we saw many trevallies and fusiliers. Absorbed on life around the wall there was a beautiful overhang with a huge sea fan and millions of glassfish were under it taking shelter. Here we also saw red coral, elephant trunk sponges and some sort of black thin sponges. We then headed back up the wall and explored a number of ergs (coral heads) on our way back to the boat. Two blue spotted rays sped over the sand and a lionfish hid in some soft coral. By the time we headed back to the boat it was beginning to get dark.
We also did our first night of the trip here - this was down round the ergs we had seen in the day. I saw a parrotfish sleeping in his protective mucus case and an average sized moray eel. A few large stripped surgeonfish and triggerfish were out on the reef which I had not previously seen in the day. A cool dive and we messed around in the sand for a while with the bio-luminescence.
