Dive Site: Habili St John's Wood
Location: St John's Reef
Description: Hammerhead shark dive / blue water drop off
Depth: 40 metres + (130 feet)
Visibility: 30 metres (100 feet)
Rating: *****
A fantastic early morning dive. We swam into the blue away from the reef and descended to 40m. After a couple of minutes four hammerheads came from below and swam right beneath us. They were stunningly peculiar and we were above them so were able to admire the silhouette of their body shape. The sharks' hammerheads were moving from right to left as their bodies undulated through the water. They appeared more graceful and less feisty then the grey reef sharks that also made a show. The hammerheads disappeared for a short while but then they returned right up to the reef as we shallowed. This was another early morning success. I am so pleased that out dive boat got us into the water before dive boats had even woken!
Back on the reef we watched a group of black and white snappers who seemed to be feeding as they were swimming up and down with their mouths open. We also saw tuna, barracuda and giant trevally.
This habili is small, so small that we circled it a number of times in one dive getting shallower each time. It was great because at one point of the habili the current pushes at you and even though this seemed taxing you knew once you'd got through it the sharks would be there! The grey reef sharks stayed there for the whole of our dive.
