Cave Diving in South Africa
Reader Reviews:
Dive Site: Badgat
Location: South Africa
Description: Inland cave system
Length: 400 metres (1310 feet)
Depth: 186 metres (610 feet)
Visibility: 5 - 50 metres (16 - 165 feet)
Rating: *****
Badgat is a flooded asbestos mine, creating a fascinating multi-level cave environment that appeals to all levels of technical diver. Dives can be undertaken anywhere from 20m in the first level, to 80m (6th level) to 110m (last level) and includes an awe-inspiring incline shaft that extends from 110m to 186m.

Great dive site with brilliant vis. The main danger is falling objects that are decaying in the shaft. I believe an ideal group size is 3 divers when going to the bottom at around 109m. Definitely not a dive site for new divers.

Superb site. Train all my cave diving students there. Currently the access to the hole is a bit of a problem as there is just one place to climb down and the steps are slippery and poorly maintained at this point. Levels are stunning, good viz in the cave, and an absolute maze you can just explore nonstop. A must see. An explorers heaven.
