Pemba Scuba Diving
Dive Site: Njao Gap (South)
Location: Pemba, Tanzania
Description: Reef / wall
Depth: 33 metres (108 feet)
Visibility: 20 metres (65 feet)
Rating: **
This reef is located on the edge of a channel leading away from a lagoon to the sea. The floor of the channel is a maximum of about 40m deep and the reef slopes up quite steeply away to near the surface. At the base of the reef there was not much in the way of life but as you climbed back up to the surface it increased with lots of clownfish in their host anemones and clouds of anthias. There were also pufferfish and bannerfish, but all of the fish were small sized. The most interesting part of the dive was seeing a large fish feeding on a dead squid out in the channel. As it ate the flesh the ink squirted out from the squid causing a dark pool around it, but the fish didn't seem to mind! There were quite a few dead squid around the western part of Pemba, whether they had died from disease or were killed by dynamite fishing was difficult to say.
This was our first dive in Pemba and it was a slight disappointment. It was cloudy above water and I think had it been brighter the reef would have been more colourful and therefore more impressive.
