Scuba Diving in Rarotonga, the Cook Islands
Reader Reviews:
Site: MV Mataora
Location: North Rarotonga (21°12'04"S; 159°45'59"W)
Description: 299 ton cargo vessel
Length: 44.25m (145 feet)
Depth: 12 to 20 metres (40 to 65 feet)
Visibility: 40 metres (130 feet)
Rating: ****
The MV Mataora was bought for $1 in December 1990 by Dive Rarotonga to sink to make an artificial reef. It lies in 18m just off the reef to the north of the island. It is home to lots of lionfish including the oscilated variety. The bow and stern have been separated by a cyclone. Depth makes it suitable for all levels.

I began diving in Rarotonga and am now a PADI open water diver. I found this site very interesting, the wreck is spread out over quite a large area and all sorts of fish inhabit the wreck and the reef around it. We saw a large amount of lionfish on this dive, which goes down to 18 metres.
Angus MacRae, PADI Open Water
