Dive Site: Canak Bay
Location: Ekice Cape, Bodrum, Turkey
Description: Reef
Depth: 6 - 15 metres (20 - 50 feet)
Visibility: 20 metres + (65 feet)
Rating: ****
Canak Bay is nestled behind a thin rock sliver near the tip of Ekice Cape. In the bay there is a confined sand area just a few metres deep. Dropping in over seagrass we headed southwest along a shallow rock ledge at 6 metres before the seabed dropped gently down to around 15 metres at the point. Most of the action here definitely seemed to be in the shallows where there was an abundance of fireworms, small wrasse, bream and painted combers. Ideal as a third dive of the day we set a leisurely pace and spotted a large common octopus watching us with one eye from his hole in the rocks. As we got too close he used his pink tentacles and pulled a small flat rock up in front of his hiding place completely protecting himself from the outside world. We took our time on the way back to the boat and were rewarded with 3 more octopi, one sitting upright in a small crater in the sand, almost invisible to the naked eye. As we stopped to observe he started free-swimming gracefully around the rocks, stopping periodically to see if we were following and making for some good photographs.
