Scuba Diving in Turkey
Reader Reviews:
Dive Site: Orak Island
Location: Black Island, Bodrum, Turkey
Description: Reef
Depth: 5 - 30 metres (15 - 100 feet)
Visibility: 20 metres (65 feet)
Rating: ***
Orak Island is located a short distance from the south coast almost exactly halfway between Bodrum and Cokertme (around 1.5 hours boat ride from either). As we dropped into 6 metres of water there was some lovely topography, not dissimilar to the moonscape type rock formations we experienced in the shallows at the Gates. As we swam across the rock fissures to the reef corner the seabed soon gave way to an almost vertical wall which drops down to around 80m. Descending to 35 metres the reef wall was made up of hundreds of oval rock pockets which looked like a frozen lava flow. All manner of small sponges and other plant life encrusted these formations and parrotfish crunched on the coral, whilst we spotted a small moray that rescinded shyly into his hole as we approached. This was certainly the largest wall we dived during our week in Turkey; however calm conditions and no current made this a site ideal for all levels of diver to enjoy.
