Scuba Diving in Turkey
Reader Reviews:
Dive Site: Small Reef
Location: Bodrum, Turkey
Description: Seamount
Depth: 5 - 35 metres (15 - 115 feet)
Visibility: 20 metres + (65 feet)
Rating: ****
Small Reef is very similar in its layout to Big Reef and lies just 200 metres to the north, slightly nearer to Bodrum. Also an underwater seamount it starts at 5 metres and has vertical drops-offs around its entire circumference, falling away to around 35 metres where the sandy seafloor slopes away further. Smaller in size than Big Reef (as its name would suggest) it is possible to circumnavigate this seamount more than once in a single dive meaning you get to see the whole seamount at its deepest part and again in the shallows. There were several large goldline grouper in the depths and on the ascent we found hermit crabs amongst the orange and yellow sponges. The visibility was excellent at 20 metres plus and only a slight current made this site ideals for all levels of diver, although the current was slightly stronger as it washed over the reef. As we held position lazily near the top of the seamount we spotted a huge common octopus near our anchor which seemed intent on gripping something hidden in the reef with its outstretched pink tentacle. Small moray eels and several stone fish dotted the reef. A very pretty dive with lots to see.
