Spider crab at Barn Pool - Courtesy of Luke Cooper-Berry

Scuba Diving Southwest Coast of England, UK, Europe

Reader Reviews:

Dive Site: Barn Pool

Location: Inside the breakwater, Plymouth

Description: Deep wall dive

Depth: 10 - 30 metres + (30 - 100 feet)

Visibility: 1 - 12 metres (3 - 40 feet)

Rating: *

Given that most of Plymouth sound is in about 14m of water, Barn Pool offers deep diving very close to the shore. It shelves off gradually from the beach on the west coast to 14m, where it drops rather more steeply to form a wall dive. I only went to 25m, but in the murk it looked like it would go significantly deeper. A silty area with not much in the way of life except plenty of crabs.

Luke Cooper-Berry, BSAC Open Water Instructor

Made a good dive when all other sites blown out, quite dark down wall but if you looked carefully you can find a variety of anemones, worms, starfish, crabs, wrasse, gobies and blennies. Also saw a squat lobster on our dive. Agree that it was quite silty and seemed to get worse the further east you went.

How come this particular deep water of Barn Pool is not shown on the charts? I am having an argument in the office that this deep water area exists (from my days in the 1980’s with divers who talked of this), but the people in the office who sail say that the charts don’t show this deep water at Barn Pool—therefore it does not exist! Can someone explain? Just as an aside—I have said the depth of water in the sound is around 40 feet, although I have been contradicted and told 40 meters. Who’s right? Can someone answer?
