Scuba Diving in Catalina Island, California, USA

Dive Site: Garibaldi Reef
Location: 5 mins from Avalon Harbour, Catalina
Description: Kelp forest
Depth: 15 metres (50 feet)
Visibility: 20 metres (65 feet)
Rating: ***
A nice, easy shallow kelp dive to the right 5mins out of Avalon harbour. We found many lobsters under the rocks and blue and red gobies everywhere. Like the name suggests there is an abundance of cheeky Garibaldi fish here. I also found an octopus hiding in a rock, I tried to urge him out but he would only come out half way and then slipped back in again! It is good to start outside of the kelp as there are shoals of silver fish in the deeper water and then work your way through the reef to the shallow rocks to find little horn sharks. Here on a final dive we also saw a sealion who again stayed with the boat and enjoyed swimming around us and quickly darting off as soon as you caught a glimpse. Not the best dive in Catalina and the viz was a bit down but it makes for a fun last dive of the day before heading back in to shore.
