There are a number of dives you can do around this island with a varied experience to nearby Sipadan. Sites include East Point, Celebes Reef, Maratua Reef and Jeffery's Reef. The are all relatively similar and you can expect to see the same sort of stuff at each site. The life around Si Amil Island is macro so you need to get close to the reef and look closely. The reef is gently sloping with coral heads, bommies and sea fans dotted around. We did Maratua Reef as a night dive and were lucky enough to see a bamboo shark in the shallows as well as basket stars, coral shrimps, decorated crabs and a slipper lobster.

At Jeffery's Reef the guide showed us two tiny pygmy seahorses. They were amazing and I really had no idea actually how small they were until then. There is no way I would have spotted them without the guide pointing them out even if I had been looking at that seafan myself to find them. Absolutely remarkable. We did see a couple of turtles here as well and four small leaffish. The leaffish were in the shallows perched on top of a rock.

Expect to see sea dragons, egg cowry shells, table coral, trunkfish, millions of nudibranchs and scorpionfish around this island. Taking a day out from Sipadan allows you to get your breath back again and look at a different type of interesting marine life.
