Scuba Diving in Mexico
Reader Reviews:
Region: Cozumel
Location: Cozumel, Mexico
Description: Island off Mexico in the Caribbean Sea
Visibility: Always great
Rating: Zero
The 2005 hurricane that hovered over Cozumel for a day and a half killed the reef. The reef directly in front of the Coral Princess Hotel is dead. The reef offshore known as Palancar Reef is dead. "What does dead mean?" -- "Dead" means no longer alive. All the colorful coral fans and appendages were ripped off by the storm and have not grown back.
"What will you see now?" -- Greenish, dead stumps. Hardly any colorful fish. If you snorkelled or dived Cozumel prior to the hurricane and are thinking about going back, you will be disappointed. I was really mad at my travel agent as well as all the promoters because they all insisted that Cozumel is still a world class dive destination. It's not. Very sad indeed.

These three photos were taken by my cousin who dove with me in Cozumel (2007). The visibility was great and the reef is on the mend.

Dived here in May 2006. Sharks and Turtles on almost every dive. Reef is on the mend, better than Egypt any day. Will be back there in June 07.

Dived Cozumel in Oct '06 and stayed at the Occidental Grand. Would say yes, the hurricane did do a lot of damage. Areas of reef were removed and covered with tonnes of sand. But from the photos I have taken would say Chris needs his eyes tested. Some stunning colours and marine life. Just slow the dive and enjoy the little things. Well worth the trip. £1800 for 2 adults and 2 weeks all inclusive and about £1000 for diving. Most dive centres will look at 45 minute dives. The right people will give you 2 dives a day with a time of 1 - 1 1/2hr dives. Lunch in the middle and for around the same price $80-$100 dollars for 2 dives.
Good value food in the town, well worth the trip out from the hotel. Just watch the timeshare sales!!!
